Age 54 and born December 22, 1948, a native of Mobile, AL and a resident of Greensboro, AL departed this life on Monday, June 23, 2003. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Shirley J. Thomas; five children, Joe, Jr., Stephanie, Joyce, Stephen and Timothy; his mother, Bernice Wilson; nine brothers; seven sisters; four grandchildren and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Age 67, a native of St. Louis, MO and longtime resident of Mobile, AL died Saturday, June 21, 2003 at her residence. She was a graduate of the University of Missouri at Columbia. Mrs. Braverman retired from the University of South Alabama College of Medicine after 32 years. During her tenure at the college, she was the Acting Administrator of the Institutional Review Board. She was a member of the Lion's Club USA Chapter and was a volunteer at Ft. Conde. Mrs. Braverman was preceded in death by a daughter, Stephanie Hardin Floyd. She is survived by two sons, John Edward Hardin of Wells Somerset, England; Cordell J. Braverman of Iowa; her mother, Esther Brand of St. Louis, MO; two sisters, Laneta Chadwick of St. Louis, MO; Dorothea Zimmerman of Tempe, AZ; one brother, John Brand of Tampa, FL; four grandchildren, Robin Edward Hardin, Jesse Kyle Hardin, Amy Elizabeth Hardin, and Kimberley Grace Hardin; other relatives and many friends. A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 28 at Pine Crest Funeral Home West Chapel 5651 Cottage Hill Road. A native of York, AL and a long time resident of Mobile died in a local health care facility Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at the age of 86. Mr. Estes attended Spring Hill Baptist Church. He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad with over 45 years of service. He was a past chairman of the B.R.T. where he served for 15 years. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Willoise Estes; two daughters, Marilyn Radney and Brenda (Arnold) Bryant, both of Mobile; three sisters, Janet Griffin of Albany, GA, Frances Taylor of Quitman, MS and Mary Louise DeLoach of Dothan, AL; four grandchildren, Shannon Hankes of Auburn, Hunter Radney, Elise Radney, both of Mobile and Ansley McDaniel of Mobile; three great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Visitation will be held Saturday, June 28, 2003 beginning at 10 a.m. with funeral services following at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Radney Funeral Home. Interment will be in Pine Crest West Cemetery. A native of Hybart, AL and a long-time resident of Mobile passed away June 26, 2003 at a local hospital. He was retired owner of Appliance Parts and Supply Co., known to loyal customers as "Capt. Jim". Mr. Hybart was an avid hunter and golfer and a member of a local mystic society. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Edith Shirah Hybart; a daughter, Susan Hybart (Claude "Sonny") Alsup of Pt. Clear, AL; a son, James W. (Allane) Hybart, III of Mobile; four grandchildren, Meredith Childers Brewer, Susan Hybart Childers, Clay Cameron Hybart and Allan Travis Hybart; two great grandchildren, Ashley Brewer and Meredith Brewer; a sister, Jane Hybart Rosborough of Tuscaloosa, AL; nieces, nephews and other relatives. She received her high school diploma from Mobile County Training School. Upon completing high school, she moved to Connecticut where she worked at the Hartford County Police Department until her retirement. She was preceded in death by her mother,Mrs. Lucy Mae Packer, and father, Mr. Calvin Bryant. She leaves to mourn her passing, a beloved son, Jokshan W. Mother Hill was a faithful member of the Sunday school and the Mother's Ministry until her health began to fail. Mattie Goodson Anderson, a retired employee of the commercial seafood processing industry, died Tuesday at her home. She was 83.
   Anderson was a native of Lake, Miss., and a resident of Bayou La Batre. She was a long-time member of the Independent Church of God.
   Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Coe, Janice Guillotte, both of Bayou La Batre, and Virginia Goree of Forest, Miss.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
   Services are set for noon today at the Independent Church of God in Bayou La Batre. Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery. Arrangements are being made by Serenity Funeral Home on Old Pascagoula Road.

Gussie Russell Bright, a native of Wilcox County and a longtime resident of Whistler, died Saturday at the age of 86.
   Survivors include seven daughters, Bessie Briggs of New York, Ernestine Carter of California, Lucy Choyce, Eloise Bright and Mattie Bright, all of Arizona, and Dorothy Mitchell and Nesidell Ward, both of Whistler; two sons, Raymond Bright and Arthur Bright, both of Eight Mile; three sisters, Willie Gray Cleveland and Laura Nobles, both of Ohio, and Vera Houston of New York; five brothers, Arnett Carlton of Ohio, Donnie Carlton and Louis Carlton, both of Mobile, Winfred Carlton of California and Floyd Carlton of Montgomery; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
   Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the noon funeral at New Light Baptist Church on St. Stephens Road in Whistler. Entombment will be in Pine Crest Mausoleum in Pine Crest Cemetery. Pine Crest Funeral Home on Dauphin Island Parkway is handling arrangements.

Emily Syble Childress Castelin, a native of Bon Secour and a resident of Bayou La Batre, died Monday at a local health care facility. She was 96.
   Castelin, a lifelong member of hte Evangelical Methodist Church, worked as a volunteer for the Senior Citizen Caregiver Program.
   Survivors include one son, Gilbert Clemmons Castelin of Bayou La Batre; two daughters, Trula Virginia Castelin Strachan of Irvington and Dawn Jacqueline Ladnier of Bayou La Batre; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
   The service is set for 2 p.m. today at Evangelical Methodist Church in Bayou La Batre, with arrangements by Serenity Funeral Home on Old Pascagoula Road. Burial will be in Oddfellows Cemetery.

Rufus Hughes, a lifelong resident of Mobile, died Tuesday at an area hospital. He was 41.
   Hughes worked as a laborer.
   Survivors include his mother, Roberta Hughes of Mobile; two daughters, Shamera Westbrook and Donita Westbrook, both of Mobile; and eight siblings, Darryl Hughes, Diane Presnell, Mamie Smith, Evelyn Byers, Cassandria Welch, Donita Majors and Marilyn Mills, all of Mobile, and Oscar Hughes Jr. of Atlanta.
   Visitation will be Saturday from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. service at Jackson Funeral Directors on Cody Road. Burial will be in Rising Son's Cemetery on Knowles Lane.


James Hybart Jr.

James Willis Hybart Jr., a longtime Mobile businessman, died Thursday at a hospital in Mobile after a short illness. He was 89.
   For many years, Hybart, a resident of Mobile, co-owned Appliance Parts on Church Street in downtown Mobile, a business he opened with his late brother in 1946.
   Hybart had also worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for several years.
   He was a graduate of Monroe County High School in Monroeville.
   Hybart, a descendant of a pioneering south Alabama family, was born in the Bell's Landing-Hybart community on the Alabama River, where his family has lived since 1814, relatives said. Hybart remained a major landowner in the area and maintained a second home there.
   He was a member of the Dauphin Way Baptist Church, the Fifty Funny Fellows carnival society and the Hybart-Bell's Landing Preservation Society.
   Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Edith Shirah Hybart of Mobile; one daughter, Susan Hybart Alsup of Point Clear; one son, James Willis Hybart III of Mobile; one sister, Jane Hybart Rosborough of Tuscaloosa; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
   Visitaion will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street. A graveside service is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Bell's Landing Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hybart.
   Memorials may be made to the Hybart-Bell's Landing Preservation Society, c/o Mrs. Carol Hybart, Route 1, Hybart, AL 36481.

Alberta Bennet James, a homemaker, died Sunday at a hospital in Detroit. She was 78.
   James was a native of Uniontown, Ala, and a longtime resident of Mobile. She was a member of the Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Plateau.
   Survivors include her husband, Melvin James of Mobile; two daughters, Mary Turner and Rosa Packer, both of Detroit; three sons, Joseph Bennett and McCarl Bennett, both of Mobile, and James Bennett of Detroit; two nieces whom she raised, Helen Leonard and Patricia Williams, both of Detroit; 18 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
   Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral at Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery.
   Arrangements are by Small Mortuary on South Broad Street.

   Loding was a lifelong resident of Mobile County.
   A graveside service is set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Magnolia Cemetery at the corner of Ann Street and Virginia Street. Arrangements are being handled by Radney Funeral Home on Dauphin Street.

Pearl Lee Lynum, a lifelong resident of Mobile, died Sunday at her home. She was 81.
   Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Bettis of Mobile, Anita Peasant of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Felicia F. Lynum of Sacramento, Calif.; one son, John Lynum of Prichard; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
   Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Christian Benevolent Funeral Home on North Hamilton Street. Visitation also will be Monday from 9 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service at Aimwell Missionary Baptist Church at 500 Earle St. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery.


Pete Congleton

Pete Congleton, retired owner and operator of Pete's Body Shop in Mobile, died Thursday at his home. He was 83.
   Congleton, a native of Pollard, Ala., was a resident of Bay Minette. He formerly lived in Mobile.
   He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
   Survivors include three grandchildren, Larry Gee of Bay Minette, Theresa Gee of Robertsdale and Terry Goins of Pine Grove; four great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
   A graveside service is set for 4 p.m. today in Bay Minette Cemetery. Norris Funeral Home in Bay Minette is handling arrangements.


Thomas Davis

Thomas Angelo Davis, a retired chiropractor, died Wednesday at an area nursing facility. He was 74.
   Davis, a native of Mobile, was a resident of Butler and a U.S. Navy veteran.
   Survivors include his wife, Virginia Davis; and one son, Al Davis, both of Butler; two daughters, Palmer Turner of Butler and Toni Jackson of Meridian, Miss.; one brother, Paul Davis of Madison, Ala.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
   Visitation will be today from 2 p.m. until the 3 p.m. service at Bumpers Funeral Home in Butler. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Butler.


John Moss

John Henry Moss, a native and resident of Chatom, died Thursday at an area hospital.
   Moss, a member of Chatom Church of God, served in the U.S. Army for 23 years, which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. He returned to Chatom to work for the Chatom Police Department and then the Washington County Sheriff's Office. He was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
   Survivors include his wife, Catherine "Kitty" Moss; two sons, John David Moss and Jeff Moss; one daughter, Alicia Diane Moss; and one sister, Augusta Seabrook, all of Chatom.
   Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Lathan Funeral Home in Chatom, where the service is set for 2 p.m. Saturday. Burial will be in the Chatom Church of God Cemetery.


Joe Thomas

Joe Louis Thomas, a native of Mobile and a resident of Greensboro, died Monday. He was 54.
   Thomas worked as a truck driver for a milk company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of True Holiness No. 2 Church of Jesus Christ in Newbern, Ala., where he was a deacon.
   Survivors include his wife, Shirley J. Thomas; and five children, Joe Thomas Jr., Stephanie Thomas, Joyce Thomas, Stephen Thomas and Timothy Thomas, all of Prichard; his mother, Bernice Wilson of Whistler; nine brothers, seven sisters; and four grandchildren.
   Visitation will be Saturday from noon until the 2 p.m. funeral at True Holiness Church of Jesus Christ, 114 S. Joseph St. in Prichard. Burial will be in Prichard Memorial Cemetery, with Memorial Funeral Home on St. Stephens Road in Prichard directing.
