Stuart Lee Perkins born July 7, 1937 in Elkton, Maryland passed away Monday, April 17, 2017 at SECU Hospice of Brunswick in Bolivia. A scholar, orator, crusader, philosopher, warrior, and patriot Stuart Perkins answered the rallying call of God, Family, and Country. Stuart was a member of the First Baptist Church of Oak Island, Oak Island, NC, the Gideons International, and Officers Christian Fellowship. Many years on the mission field took him around the world with North Carolina Baptist Men, GAIN, and Hope International. Stuart is survived by his wife of 29 years, Edna Odom Perkins, daughter Lisa (Mrs. B. Scott Shenk), grandchildren Aria Hess, Joshua Hess, and Brian Shenk of Mt. Joy, Pennsylvania, sister Kay P. Cloud of Willow Street, Pennsylvania, and brother Duane M. Perkins of Mt. Gretna, Pennsylvania. Stuart is predeceased by his daughter Leanne (Mrs. Wayde Hess). As an officer with a 30 year military career in the US Army, pre-retirement assignments included the National Intelligence Council, Headquarters Central Intelligence Agency, Washington, DC, Institute for National Strategic Studies, Washington, DC, Office of Director Joint Staff Joint Staff Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, DC, and Group Commander 7th Special Forces (Air Borne) Ft. Bragg, NC. Stuart was awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal, Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and many other decorations and awards. His combat record includes two years in Southeast Asia. Stuart achieved a military education from The National War College, USA Command and General Staff College, and Infantry Officers Advanced Course. His civilian education includes Florida State University, University of Southern California, and Catholic University of America. Post retirement, Stuart spent many memorable and fulfilling years farming in central Pennsylvania. He was an avid reader, student of foreign languages, and volunteer with several church projects and community organizations. He was a member of the Mifflintown Rotary International and the Hancock Lodge. Funeral services will be 2:00pm Saturday, April 22, 2017 at First Baptist Church of Oak Island with interment in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00pm to 2:00pm at the church.
