Alfred Howe Rowe (1914-1998)

Alfred Howe Rowe was born on 18 May 1914 in Virginia. He died on 2 January 1998 in Abilene, Texas. He married Mildred Marion Williamson on 20 November 1935 in Williamsburg, Virginia.

ABILENE, Texas - Alfred Howe "Slick" Rowe, 83, of Abilene and formerly of Hampton, died Friday, Jan. 2, 1998, in a local care facility.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5, 1998, in First Baptist Chapel with the Rev. David Leyerle officiating. Music will be provided by Mrs. David Leyerle, under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory. The body will be cremated.
Mr. Rowe was born May 28, 1914, to Thomas Jefferson and Catherine Lewis Rowe of Buckroe Beach. He lived in Hampton for 72 years until the death of his wife of 49 years, Mildred Williamson, whom he married in Williamsburg.
Mr. Rowe was employed with Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., in Newport News, from 1935 until his retirement in 1979, where he developed their baseball team.
He played and coached semipro softball and baseball most of his adult life, gardened and grew prize-winning roses, and was president of the Twin-River Hunt Club for many years.
He was baptized in the River Jordan, Gloucester. When records were destroyed by fire, he was baptized the second time in Memorial Baptist Church, Hampton, where he was a member of the Gideons Bible Class and the male chorus, and was actively involved in church-wide fish frys.
He moved to Abilene upon the death of his wife in 1985, and became a member of First Baptist Church, where he was active in the Wednesday Night Supper and Benevolence Committee, volunteered in the Family Life Center and assisted with the annual Deacon Fish Fry.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Jefferson and Catherine Lewis Rowe; two brothers, Edgar and Thomas Rowe; a sister, Edith Wilkins; and a son-in-law, Homero A. Gonzalez.
He is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Mrs. Thomas Morgan) and Jacqueline (Mrs. Homero Gonzalez) of Abilene; five grandchildren, Deborah (Mrs. Daniel McFarland), Homero (Karen) Gonzalez II, Traci Brandon of Abilene, David Gonzalez of Euless and Thomas Todd Morgan of Austin; four great-grandchildren, Melia, Miles and Mason McFarland and Jordan Gonzalez of Abilene; a sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Curtis Mull) of Gloucester; six nieces and four nephews; and a special friend, Billie Fleming.
