Services for Elmer Mathews of Jasper, age 64, were held at Stringer and Griffin Funeral Home with Fred Barker and Henry Sims officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.
Mr. Mathews passed away April 1 at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Beaumont.
The Dallas area native was a longtime Jasper resident. He operated Reid's Restaurant at Annahuae and Mathews Restaurant in Jasper for many years. A World War II Navy veteran, he was a charter member of Jasper's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6380.
He is survived by his wife, Nelda Mathews of Jasper; three sons, Leonard Mathews of Annahuae, Donald Mathews of Wallisville, and Bennie Mathews of Jasper; two daughters, Linda Sims of Jasper and Judy Carter of Kirbyville; two brothers, Rev. Billy Brooks of Dallas and Leon Griffith of Quitman; his mother-in-law, Etta Barker of Jasper; and 21 grandchildren.
