Emma Sue Crawford Howze

Services for Emma Sue Crawford Howze, a native of Shubuta, residing in Chickasaw, were held on January 7, 1991, at Radney Funeral Home in Saraland, Alabama with burial in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
   She passed away on January 4, 1991, at her residence.
   She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Mr. Ernest L. and Nancy Howze, Saraland, Ala.; Mr. Patrick H. and Margaret Howze, Jr., Chickasaw; three grandchildren, Randall L. Howze, Mobile; Pamela Howze Smith, Bear Creek, Fla.; Mr. Patrick H. Howze, III, Chickasaw; three great grandchildren, Taylor Joseph Smith, Bear Creek, Fla.; Jordan Russ and Tara Lindsay Howze, both of Mobile; nieces, nephews and other relatives.
   In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to The American Cancer Society.


George W. Johnston

Services for Dr. George W. Johnston, age 80, a Quitman native, were held on January 25, 1991, at First Baptist Church in Starkville with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.
   He passed away on January 22, 1991, at Oktibbeha County Hospital due to heart failure.
   Dr. George W. Johnston, a retired Mississippi State University botany professor, organized and taught the Men's Bible Class for 38 years. He was a lay minister for Center Grove and Longview Baptist Churches.
   He received a bachelor's degree from MSU in 1933 with a double major in botany and English. In 1936, he returned to MSU as a graduate assistant in the Department of Botany. He received a master's from MSU in 1938. In 1940, he received a doctorate from Duke Unviersity in cytology. In 1940, he returned to MSU as a botany instructor. In 1975, he retired from MSU after thirteen years as Head of the Botany Department.
   He was a member of the Sigma Chi Omicron Delta Kappa and Blue Key. His professional memberships included the Botanical Society of America, the International Society of Plant Morphologist and Mississippi Academy of Science. He also authored several articles.
   He is survived by his wife, Ruby Lee; one son, George V. Johnston of Independence; brothers, V.M. Johnston, Conway, S.C.; E.L. Johnston, Sheffield, Ala., and Lamar Johnston of Columbia; and four grandchildren.
   Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Fund or the Alzheimer's Disease Foundation.


Ira Martin Carney
The Clarke County Tribune
Services for Ira Martin Carney, age 56, of Rt. 3, Quitman, were held on January 26, 1991, at Wright's Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Johnny Mosley and Rev. Lee Underwood officiating. Burial was in the Antioch Cemetery.
   He passed away on January 25, 1991, at his residence.
   Mr. Martin is survived by two sons, Jimmy Ray Carney, and Billy Ray Carney, both of Quitman; one daughter, Regina Ivy, Quitman; three sisters, Rether Underwood, Myra Underwood, and Isabella Oliver, all of Quitman; and four grandchildren.
