Charles Herbert Dick, 92, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017, at Avalon Health Center in Mystic.

   Born in Washington, D.C., on June 3, 1925, he was the son of Ella Frances (Batson) and John Herbert Dick, becoming a third generation Washingtonian.

    He graduated from McKinley High School in Washington, D.C. and immediately enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he served during World War II as a bombardier-navigator. After his discharge, he earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland and a master's degree in education from George Washington University.

   Charles then embarked on a distinguished 38 year career in federal government service, beginning with the Department of the Army. He was selected for service with the National Security Agency and then the Department of the Navy where he became an expert on personnel management.

   In his boyhood, he was an active member of his neighborhood Boy Scout troop, spending many vacations with the troop at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, Va. Charles was an active member of Resurrection Lutheran Church in Arlington, Va. for many years. During summers, he was active with the St. George Episcopalian Chapel in Tenants Harbor, Maine, where he served as the chapel treasurer for 18 years.

   Charles, also known as Buddy, grew up near the railroad lines in NE Washington, D.C., and developed a lifelong love of trains, maps, and travel. He spent much of his leisure time reading, a passion he passed on to his children and grandchildren, whose activities he followed with great interest. Charles was devoted to his beloved wife of 69 years, Jean Frances Root, his family and many friends.

   He is survived by his wife and children, John of Arlington, Va. and Annapolis, Md. and Jennifer and her husband, James O'Donnell, of Noank; and seven grandchildren, Mhari, Jemma, Fiona, Conor and Aine O'Donnell, and Gregory and Evan Dick.

   Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at Noank Baptist Church in Noank, and later at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Arlington, Va. in January 2018.
