Dr. James Ralph Cooley

A native of Alexander City, AL and resident of Mobile since 1960, died peacefully at his home on March 25, 2003. Dr. Cooley was distinguished at an early age by earning the rank of Eagle Scout and senior life Saver with the Boy Scouts of America by the age of 15. He was a veteran of World War II and was stationed three years in Japan as a member of the 11th Airborne Division. Upon returning home he earned his Bachelors of Science from Auburn University and then earned his DMD degree from the University of Alabama's College of Dentistry. He practiced in Childersburg, AL and Sylacauga, AL before moving to Mobile in 1960. He was a much-loved Dentist in the Chickasaw area for over 42 years before retiring in December of 2002. He was a lifetime member of the American Dental Association and a Silver certificate Member of the Alabama Dental Association. Dr. Cooley is survive by his beloved wife of 38 years, Betty Fillingim Cooley; three children, Victoria Cooley McGilvray (Dr. J. Michael), Eric R. Cooley, Melinda Youngblood (Terry); two grandchildren, Jackson Kade McGilvray, Nicholas Youngblood; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by one son, James R. Cooley, Jr. and one grandson, James Ralph Cooley, III. Visitation will be held at Radney Funeral Home at Dauphin Street on Thursday, March 27, 2003 from 5-8PM. The funeral will be on Friday, March 28, 2003 at 12 Noon at Semmes First Baptist Church. The family will receive fiends in the church from 11:30 AM until service time. Rose Mary Hartley

A life long resident of Mobile, AL died in a local hospital on Wednesday, March 26, 2003. Mrs. Hartley was a lifelong volunteer at the Little Sisters of the Poor Sacred Heart Residence and was the daughter of the late Claude and Emma Landry. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Hartley and daughter, Mary Frances Hartley. She is survived by four children, Rose Marie (Ralph) Williams, Jim (Laurie) Hartley, Jr., Daniel A. (Michelle) Hartley and Terry (Jennifer) Hartley, all of Mobile, AL; two sisters, Rena Callura, of Dinuber, CA and Theresa Dorman, of Bayou La Batre, AL; two brothers, Joseph Landry, of Mobile, AL and Wilburt Landry, of Bayou La Batre, AL; eight grandchildren, James Michael Davis, Michelle Sanford, Justin Hartley, Caleb Hartley, Victoria Hartley, Jason Hartley, Rachel Hartley and Jared Hartley; three great-grandchildren, Jaymie M. Davis, Joelye B. Davis and Marlee H. Davis; nieces, nephews and other relatives. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 P.M. on Friday, March 28, 2003 from the chapel of the Sacred Heart Residence of the Little Sisters of the Poor. The family will receive friends from 5 P.M. until 8 P.M. on Thursday at the Little Sisters of the Poor with the Rosary at 7 P.M. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 1655 McGill Avenue, Mobile, Alabama 36604. Interment will be in Mobile Memorial Gardens. Sreboth, Rev. Msgr. G. Warren Wall, Rev. Peter J. Cunningham, Rev. Steven T. Williams, Rev. W. Bry Shields, Rev. James M. Coleman and Rev. Paul A. Halladay. Deacon at the mass was Rev. Mr. William L. Age 94, a native of Mobile, AL, died in a local nursing home, Tuesday, March 25, 2003. Mrs. LeGros was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, James T. LeGros, Sr.; one son, Kirk W. Scarcliff; and one granddaughter, Melissa Sonnier. She is survived by five children, Sandra L. Sonnier and Annie M. LeGros, both of Maryland, James T. LeGros of Mississippi, John N. Scarcliff and Harold B. Scarcliff, both of Mobile, Alabama; 17 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 24 great-great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Radney Funeral Home, Dauphin Street. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, March 28, 2003 at 12 noon at St. Matthew's Catholic Church. John Vincent O'Brien

Born August 30, 1933, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, died at a local hospital on Tuesday, March 25, 2003. Mr. O'Brien was the retired Clerk of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Alabama. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rebecca York O'Brien; three sons and two daughters, David (Debbie) O'Brien, Laura (Joey) Betbeze, Danny (Michele) O'Brien, Vince (Kim) O'Brien, and Beth (Thomas) Johnson; nine grandchildren, J. Gaines, Barclay, John Blake, Michael, Kathleen, Ty, Jake, Katie and William; his mother, Frances O'Brien Robertson; one brother and one sister, Roy Louis O'Brien and Mary O'Brien Hand; hosts of other relatives and friends. Mr. O'Brien was preceded in death by his twin brother, Joseph William O'Brien. Visitation will be in the Sarto Center of St. Pius X. Catholic Church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28, 2003 preceding a Memorial Mass which will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Ruby Virginia Ogle

A native of Tullahoma, TN and a resident of Chickasaw, AL for 69 years, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at a local hospital. She was a charter member of Chickasaw United Methodist Church and a pillar of the Chickasaw community. She was a beloved family member and matriarch of the Ogle family. She is survived by two sisters. Mrs. Jane Ogle Webb of Manchester, TN and Mrs. Edith Ogle Ray of Tullahoma, TN; one brother, Mr. Roy Ogle of Cordova, TN; nieces, nephews and other relatives. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at 11AM in the Chickasaw United Methodist Church. A native of Axis, AL born November 11, 1931 exchanged this life for eternity on Saturday, March 22, 2003 at a local hospital. He was a veteran of World War II and a retiree of Alabama Power Company after serving 34 years. He confessed Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Williams Chapel Baptist Church, Mt. Vernon, AL, where he served as a deacon and a member of the usher board. He leaves to cherish his memories a devoted wife, Mamie L. Young; three sons, Weldon (Lakeitha) Young, Jr. of Saraland, AL; Carlton Young of Keaau, Hawaii; and Timothy Young of Axis, AL; one brother, Rev. Frank (Carrie) Young of Creola, AL; one sister, Bernice Young of Mobile, AL; six sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; one aunt, Annise Chestang of Mobile, AL; six grandchildren, two devoted, Tyshia (Dedra) Young-Miller of Huntsville, AL; and RaeShawn Young of Mobile, AL; three grandchildren, Robert (Corine) Young; Patricia Robinson, and one devoted Arizia Young Malone; two devoted caregivers, Elsie Whatley and Elizabeth Minyard; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A native of Martin, TN and a long time resident of Mobile, AL, exchanged this life for an eternal one in Heaven on March 24, 2003 at the age of 93, after a long illness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank P. Bullard; her parents, H. Ezra Blake and Annie Vancleave Blake, two brothers, James and Kenneth Blake, also a sister, June Blake Acroyd. "Ms. Bea" was a long time member of First Baptist Church Theodore. She was a Sunday School Teacher for 22 years and was President of the Women's Missionary Union (WMU) there for 4 years before her illness. She was an avid gardener, African violet lover and well known tatting artist. She enjoyed life, service, and family. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Ann Jones of Mobile; three grandchildren, Alyson (Geoffrey) Jones Lawson, Arlen F. (Machelle) Jones, III of Mobile and S. Blake (Dianne) Jones of Atlanta, GA, formerly Mobile, AL; also a sister, Corinne Grugett of Memphis, TN. She leaves also to cherish her memory five great grandchildren. Christopher Lawson, Anna Lawson, Stephen Jones of Mobile, AL, Bryan Jones and Andrew Jones of Atlanta, GA, and many loved relatives. 67, born in Johnstonville (Conecuh County) and a resident of Bay Minette, Alabama, died Tuesday, March 25, 2003 at a Mobile hospital. He was Deputy B-13 with the Baldwin County Sheriff's Department retiring after 22 years of service. He began his career in law enforcement as an Alabama State Trooper. He was a nuclear weapons mechanic specialist serving with the U.S. Air Force; founding member of the North Baldwin Sheriff's Search and Rescue for 33 years; member of Pine Grove Baptist Church; member of Fraternal Order of Police; member of Dean Masonic Lodge No. 112, F.&A.M. and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 470, Brooklyn, Alabama. He is survived by his wife, Imogene (Wells) Overbey, Bay Minette, AL; his mother, Maxie Overbey, originally of Johnstonville (Conecuh Co.), AL; one son, Walter Woodrow "Woody" (Mari) Overbey, III, Rabun, AL; two daughters, Rhonda Jean Overbey, Bay Minette, AL and Michelle Overbey Heumier, Bay Minette, AL, Logan Mershon Heumier, Bay Minette, AL and Sarah Ryals, Bay Minette, AL. James T. Caraway

James Thomas Caraway, a corrections officer for the state of Alabama, died Tuesday. He was 56. Caraway was a native and resident of Atmore. Survivors include two sons, James Caraway and Paul Caraway; and three daughters, JoAnne Radford, Sue Boyington and Tammy Smith, all of Atmore; one sister, Lois Garrett of Walnut Hill, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home in Atmore, where the service is set for 11 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in McCullough Cemetery in McCullough, Ala.
