Leanore Hartenstine Perkins (1911-2002)

Leanore Hartenstine Perkins was born on 27 February 1911 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She died on 3 March 2002 in Pennsylvania. She is buried in Eastlawn Cemetery in Swarthmore, Delaware, Pennsylvania.

Leanore H. Perkins, 91, of Swarthmore, retired head librarian at the Swarthmore Public Library, died March 3 at Taylor Hospice in Ridley park.
Born in Philadelphia, Miss Perkins resided in Elkton, MD, before moving to Swarthmore in 1923. She grew up in a pre-Revolutionary home known as the Ogden House and graduated from Swarthmore High School in 1931. She earned a kindergarten teacher's certificate from Miss Illman's School.
In earlier years, Miss Perkins worked in various schools as a teacher's aide. During World War II, she worked at a nursery school in Glenolden and belonged to a Red Cross group in Swarthmore.
As the librarian at the Swarthmore Public Library, Miss Perkins conducted a weekly story hour for pre-school children. Fond of poetry and rhymes, she was a leader of the former Poet's Circle. She enjoyed letter writing and was a lifelong diarist, who enjoyed flowers, backyard birds, spectacular sunsets, and nature.
Miss Perkins was a member of Swarthmore Friends Meeting, where she often cared for children while their parents attended meeting on Sunday.
She loved mysteries, especially the more genteel variety by British authors. She was known for her gracious smile and kindly, patient manners.
Miss Perkins was the daughter of the late Joseph Hinchliffe Perkins, Sr and Mary Hartenstine Perkins. She was the sister of the late Joseph Hinchliffe Perkins, Jr and Virginia Perkins Cressman.
Survivors: Sister with whom she lived, Anne J. Perkins, eight nieces and nephews; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Memorial Service: 3 pm Saturday, March 16, at Swarthmore Friends Meeting, Whittier Room, Swarthmore.
Burial: Eastlawn Cemetery, Ridley Township, was held privately.
Arrangements: Minshall-Shrophsire Funeral Home, Middletown.
