J. H. Martin
The Clarke County Tribune
While walking the tracks of the Mississippi-Eastern J. H. Martin, a prominent planter of the Linton neighborhood, is struck by train, the injuries from which resulting in his death a few hours later.
The accident happened about 7 o'clock Monday a.m. about 10 miles east of Crandall, on a trestle. It seems the trestle is near a curve and when the on coming train was seen by Mr. Martin he tried to cross the trestle ahead of the train, which he failed to do. He was struck and knocked below, breaking both limbs. He was picked up and hurriedly brought to Quitman. Before reaching here, he expired on the train. A companion seeing the danger leaped from the trestle thereby escaping with his life. Mr. Martin miscalculated the distance or the speed of the train and in his determination to beat he train across the trestle met with the above mentioned results.
The remains were taken in charge by his nephew, C. J. Martin, of this place, and the body prepared for burial. Interrment occured at Mont Rose Church Cemetery the following Tuesday.
Mr. Martin was one of the most successful planters in the county, a splendid road man, and has many friends and admirers in this section.
He is 63 years of age and leaves a family.
