Grace Newell Tennis was born on 8 August 1918 in Elizabeth City, Virginia. She died on 9 January 2004 in Hampton, Virginia. She married Charles Atwood Perkins on 18 December 1938 in Elizabeth City, Virginia.

HAMPTON - Grace Newell Tennis Perkins, 85, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2004. Born in Elizabeth City County on Aug. 8, 1918, she had been a Seaford resident from 1943 until moving to the Devonshire a short time ago. Mrs. Perkins was a graduate of Hampton High School and a Nursing School graduate of Thomas Nelson Community College. She worked 20 years as a nurse for Eastern State Hospital and will be remembered for her services to the Red Cross water safety program in York County and for her nursing care of the elderly of York County after her retirement. Survivors include her daughter, Margaret Perkins Lloyd of London, England; two grandchildren, James Cary Lloyd of London and Anne Lloyd Kynigos of Wilton, Conn.; three great-grandsons, Miles Andreas Kynigos and Robert Stefanos Kynigos of Wilton, and Thomas William Hawkins Lloyd of London; and one sister, Margaret E. Tennis of Hampton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Atwood Perkins, and a son, John Atwood Perkins. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home by the Rev. Earl Christian with interment to follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday night at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Diabetes Association.
