Death has again invaded the ranks of our own people.
This (illegible) the call came June 16th, at 9 o'clock P.M. to Mrs. Lucy Jane Slay, beloved wife of Hon. D. J. Slay, the efficient President of the present Board of Supervisors of Clarke County. Mrs. Slay was born May 28, 1866 being the eldest child of F. A. and Mrs. Deborah Ann McLendon. She was married to D. J. Slay December 13, 1882. To their union eleven children were born, namely: Jno. L.; Agnes L. (Mrs. Alex Riley); Deborah L (Mrs. J. C. Scott); Belle L. (Mrs. Henry McDonald); Lucy L. (Mrs. J. (page cut off) Riley); Frank L.; Dolway L.; Mary (page cut off); Grady L.; Annie L.; Maude L, Mrs. Scott and Annie L. are dead. The nine are not only living--they are living honorable lives.
It was emphasized at the funeral that there is not a failure or reckles (illegible).
Mrs. Slay was (illegible) a good woman. She was (illegible) she was good and religiously inclined. In describing the perfect woman the writer of one (illegible) Book of Proverbs (illegible) her husband and child (illegible) "blessed." (illegible) in the life of Mrs. Slay, (illegible) family of children (illegible) more nearly perfect (illegible) lived to bless and serve (illegible). She possessed to (illegible) mother-heart. As (illegible) more than a mere help (illegible) her husband says of her that (illegible) the lode-stone of his (illegible) lode-star of his very (illegible) a devoted wife loyal (illegible) a kind-hearted neighbor, a (illegible) Christian--these are (illegible) which describe (illegible) way just as she was in (illegible).
(Illegible) death-bed she expressed (illegible) to meet her God (illegible) the end came she (illegible) her recovery was (illegible) talked of her home (illegible) much calmness and (illegible) friends.
The funeral was held at old Elm Church of which she was a faithful member. Sunday morning June 18, (page cut off), and was conducted by her (page cut off), Rev. J. T. Cooper, assisted by (page cut off) V. Sallie and R. S. Gavin. (page cut off) unprecedentedly large crowd (page cut off) every section of the county attended the very high esteem in which the deceased and her immediate family are held.
To the stricken family, including (page cut off) aged mother of the deceased, Mrs. (page cut off) F. McLendon, the entire county extends deepest and most profound sympathies.
