Elizabeth Ann Hemphill (1850-1929)

Elizabeth Ann Hemphill was born on 22 December 1850 in Elton, Cecil, Maryland. She died on 28 October 1929 in Wilmington, New Castle, Delaware from dilatation of heart. She married John Perkins Harlan on 31 October 1872 in Chester, Delaware, Pennsylvania.

Seated at the dinner table in the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Thompson, 213 West Ninth street, yesterday, Mrs. Eliza A. Harlan, aged 78, was stricken ill and died almost instantly. Mrs. Harlan, who made her home with Mr and Mrs. Thompson, was drinking a cup of tea when taken ill. Mrs. Harlan who was the widow of John P. Harlan, who died 14 years ago, had been in health and had not complained of feeling ill. According to her daughter, with whom she had lived since the death of her husband, her mother had been talking with her during the morning.
   She was born in Elkton, Md., the daughter of Joseph Hemphill. She had lived in this city for the past 60 years. Her husband until the time of his death was employed by the Reading Company.
   In addition to Mrs. Thompson, she is survived by the following children, Mrs. Lena E. Hume, Mrs. William Chambers, and George Harlan, all of this city, Mrs. Jacob Groff, Lancaster, Pa., Mrs. Charles W. Burlin, Buffalo, N.Y., and William T. Harlan, of New York city.
   The funeral will take place from her late home at 11 o'clock Thursday morning with services in the chapel at Riverview cemetery. Burial will be in the same cemetery.
