Mrs. Jennie Padgett Gilbert

Mrs. Jennie Padgett Gilbert, 65, of Mobile, Ala., died at the Mobile Infirmary in Mobile Wednesday night, April 7, at 11:45 p.m. Death was attributed to an acute heart attack.
   Mrs. Gilbert was a native of Alabama and had resided in Mobile for the past four years. Prior to that she lived in Stonewall for a number of years.
   Funeral services were held at the Stonewall Baptist church Friday, April 9, at 2:00 p.m., with the Rev. W. H. Ross officiating, assisted by the Revs. W. L. Meadows and W. C. McLelland. Interment was made in the Stonewall cemetery.
   Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Earl Floyd, Quitman; four sons, Curtis Gilbert, Monroe, La., Randolph Gilbert, Prichard, Ala., Leon Gilbert, Chickasaw, Ala., E. W. Gilbert, Plateau, Ala.; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Fredico, San Francisco, Calif., Mrs. Jim Downs, Stonewall, Miss.; 15 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
   Active pallbearers were Glynn Robinson, Ted Ballard, Delvin Smith, Willie Rasco, Alford Barnes and D. L. Parker.
   Walters Funeral Home in charge.


Carl E. Peterson

Carl E. Peterson died at the family residence Route 1, Quitman, at 7:00 p.m. Friday, April 2, following an illness of several months.
   He was born in Tingeryd, Sweden on Oct. 31, 1880, receiving his education there, coming to the United States in 1909. Being a bridge construction engineer, he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railroad for several years in Canada and later worked throughout the north and northwestern states with railroads. He settled in Wisconsin in 1917, where he met and married Mrs. Abbie Kunap. They moved to Quitman in 1927, making their home in Hortom community, where she died in 1944. He later married the former Mrs. Frances Moore, who survives.
   Funeral services were held in the chapel at McClellan and Walters Funeral Home April 4 at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Wm. C. McLelland officiating. Interment was in the Enterprise cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Peterson; two step-children, Henry Moore and Mrs. Henry Bohl, both of Meridian.
   Pallbearers were Grover Riley, John L. Riley, Ira Bishop, Arthur Long, Charlie Riley and Joe Mena. Honorary were friends of the family.


George P. Keahey

On March 28 death claimed the life of George P. Keahey, life-long resident of the Souenlovie community in Clarke County. Born on December 32, 1868, Mr. Keahey had spent the long span of 85 years endearing himself to all who knew him.
   In every walk of life his friends were in countless numbers. Mr. Keahey, a retired Southern Railroad employee, was a member of the Pachuta Masonic Lodge. In 1891 he united with the Souenlovie Baptist Church and had been an active member all these years.
   Funeral services were held on March 29 from the Souenlovie Baptist church and burial was in the old Souenlovie cemetery.
   Beside his wife, who, died on Aug. 5, 1944, Mr. Keahey is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Ruth Sanders of Quitman; four sons, Abe K. of West Enterprise, J. J., of Decatur, A. E. of Memphis, and W. P. Keahey of Memphis, Tenn. One brother, John Keahey of West Enterprise; 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
   Pachuta Masons had charge of the funeral services, assisted by the Revs. Golman, Logan, Massey and Pierce.


Mrs. Eula Watkins

Mrs. Eula Watkins, 82, of McHenry, Miss., member of a prominent Mississippi family, who with her husband, the late James Milton Watkins, Sr., taught school in Mississippi and Alabama and was an artist and art teacher, whose works were exhibited in the state, died at the Watkins Memorial hospital in Quitman Thursday at 7 a.m. after an extended illness.
   Survivors include a son, Dr. Leonard Lyon Watkins, professor of banking, School of Economics, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; three daughters, Mrs. Robert J. Carpenter, West Enterprise; Miss Evelyn Watkins, supervisor of junior-primary, Madison College Training School, Harrisonville, Va.; and Mrs. George Ellison, National Education Association staff member, Washington, D. C., and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
   Mrs. Watkins was a sister-in-law of Dr. Horace C. Watkins, Sr., head of the Watkins Memorial hospital, Quitman, and of Mrs. F. E. Davidson, Yantley, Ala.
   Funeral services were held at the McHenry Methodist church Saturday at 11 a.m., with interment in the McHenry cemetery. The Rev. Mr. Willoughby Saucier, pastor of the McHenry church, officiated, assisted by the Rev. W. T. Mangum, minister, Enterprise Methodist church.
   Pallbearers were J. M. King, Hattiesburg; E. M. Loper, Ocean Springs; Prof. Gregory, Perkinston Junior College at Perkinston; William Maulding, Ethan Bond, Henry Lott, Jack Stanton, Billie and Jesse Parker; Alvin Bowden, T. D. Threadgall and Jack Rutledge, all of McHenry.

Wilner E. Pritchett (1918-2004)

Wilner E. Pritchett was born on 23 July 1918 in Brewton, Escambia, Alabama. She died on 29 September 2004. She is buried in Springhill Metho...
