C. E. Watkins
The Clarke County Tribune
The many friends of Dr. and Mrs. Watkins deeply sympathize with them in the loss of Dr. Watkins' brother, Prof. C. E. Watkins, Bay Springs, Miss. Several months ago Prof. Watkins lost his oldest daughter, a fine girl just coming into womanhood. His mother after visiting the Doctor's family here went to Bay Springs to visit in the Professor's home. Soon after reaching there, though, she too was taken seriously ill--and died in a very short while. Just a bit later the Professor's wife was stricken and soon passed away. These troubles were too severe for the Professor's nervous and mental life. He soon lapsed into a state of unconsciousness caused by brain fever, and lingered for months. Last week he passed away. And thus ends one of the saddest chapters in the catalog of human events that has ever come within the knowledge of this writer.
Prof. Watkins was a man of more than ordinary ability.
He was a teacher by profession--but he was more than a teacher. He was a real inspirer of the best that lies in young life. His Pastor at his funeral, who was once his pupil, said that all he is he owes to the inspiration that came into his life through contact with this good man. "And not only myself," said the good Pastor, "bue I know at least a half-dozen others whose lives are real assets in the world to-day because our good Professor who taught us also inspired us."
Five orphans are left in the home, ranging in ages from a fine boy of the teen age to a babe of a few months.
The trustees of the Bay Springs school elected Prof. J. M. Watkins, of Waynesboro, to succeed his brother, and the children are now with the former.
