Bill Sykes

A memorial service for Bill Sykes, age 74, of La Grande, was held at the Payne Family Mortuary. Frank Cooke and the La Grande Masonic Lodge participated.
   He passed away on October 14, 1991, at La Grande Ronde Hospital.
   Mr. Sykes was born on March 13, 1917, in Quitman to Slater and Iris (Covington) Sykes. On July 22, 1940, he married Veralee Hoagland at Reno, Nev.
   After graduating from Quitman High School, Mr. Sykes moved to California. He served in the U.S. Army, 10th Tank Battalion, 5th Armored Division, during World War II. Following the war he was employed by a creamery in Klamath Falls until 1964. He then was employed by the Pendleton Woolen Mills until his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the La Grande Eagles Lodge, La Grande Masonic Lodge, La Grande Chapter No. 9 Royal Arch Masons, Union Council No. 5 Cryptic Masons, Eastern Oregon Commandery No. 5 Knights Templar, Al Kader Shrine AAONMS and the Union County Shrine Club. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
   He is survived by his wife, Veralee Sykes of La Grande; daughters, Elizabeth Abemethy of Portland, Rebecca Cross of La Grande and Jennifer Abemethy of Portland; brother, Thomas R. Sykes of Quitman; sisters, Lorena Brow, Klamath Falls, Mabel Meyers, Houston; and Louise Walker of Quitman.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children in care of Payne Family Mortuary, 1508 Fourth St. La Grande 97850.


James D. McQuaig

Services for James D. McQuaig of Rt. 1 Stonewall, were held on November 11, 1991, at Wright's Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Stonewall Cemetery. Rev. C.A. Farmer and Rev. J.C. Burks officiated.
   Mr. McQuaig passed away on November 9, 1991, at Riley Memorial Hospital in Meridian.
   He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hazel McQuaig, Stonewall; one son, James McQuaig, Meridian; three daughters, Elizabeth Hamrick, Stonewall; Louise Broadhead, Forest, Ms.; Lois Adkins, Quitman; twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Heart Fund.


Leila R. Jenkins

Services for Leila R. Jenkins, age 91, of Rt. 2 Shubuta, were held on November 6, 1991, at Wright's Funeral Home Chapel with burial in McGowan's Chapel Cemetery. Rev. Delbert Freeman and Rev. Art Covington officiated.
   Mrs. Jenkins passed away on November 5, 1991, at H.C. Watkins Hospital.
   She is survived by two brothers, Berry Robinson, Quitman; Grady Robinson, Hanford, Ca.; sisters, Naomi Freeman, Houston, Texas; Audry Ethridge, Collinsville; Sadie Fikes, Rose Hill; Ava Ruth Crane, Stonewall; Minnie Hovie, Orlando, Fla.; Myrtis McMichael, Breaux Bridge, LA.
