The News Journal, 2 August 2016Bill passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2016. Bill retired from the News Journal in 2004 after 42 years of service. He started as a Reporter, then became the Features Editor, followed by Television Columnist and finally, Theater Critic. Bill was also a DJ at WILM in the 1960's and hosted a Talk Radio program called "The Bill Hayden Show".Bill was a 1958 graduate of P.S. DuPont High School and 1962 graduate of the University of Delaware. He was a member of the Society of Professional Journalist. Bill loved animals, especially dogs and cats. He was a decedent of the Harlan Family who settled in the Centreville, DE area in 1687 under a land grant from William Penn.Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carol W. Hayden; daughter, Lesly Hemphill; son, Christopher Hayden; grandchildren, Cody Hemphill, Shawn Hayden, Harlan Hayden and Kyle Hemphill and great grandson, Carter.Memorial Services will be at 7 PM on Wednesday, August 3 at Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, 212 E. Justis St., Newport where visitation will begin at 6 PM. Burial will be private.Bill's family would appreciate contributions in his memory to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
