Lancaster New Era, 8 August 1977Franklin Buckwalter Hess, a retired farmer, died at 6 a.m. today at Village Vista Nursing Home where he had been a patient for one year.Hess was 82 and formerly lived in Conestoga R1. Before going to Village Vista, he resided at Reformed Mennonite Home, Lancaster, for seven years. His late wife, Helen Groff Hess, died in 1959.After he retired from farming in 1950, Hess worked for Safe Harbor Water and Power Co. on the grounds and maintenance crews, and as security guard, retiring in 1963. After his retirement, he did custom woodworking at his home.Born in Conestoga Township, he was a son of the late George Hertzler and E. Susan Buckwalter Hess.He is survived by two sons, Robert G., Conestoga; F. Melvin, Lancaster, and three daughters, Catherine E., wife of G. William Frimd, Lancaster; E. Susan, wife of Robert H. Aument, Millersville, and Evelyn M., wife of C. Russell Kauffman, Willow Street.He also is survived by 13 grandchildren; three great-granddaughters; one brother, Witmer B. Hess, Conestoga, and two sisters, Anna B., wife of Charles H. Frey, Lancaster, and Elizabeth B., wife of Henry F. McKonley, Columbia.
