"Bob" Hess, 73, of 736 River Corner Road, Conestoga, died unexpectedly Sunday afternoon at Lancaster General Hospital of natural causes.Hess owned and operated Hess' Lawn Mower Shop, Conestoga, for 30 years. He last worked as a heavy equipment operator for J.D. Eckman Inc., Atglen, for 25 years, retiring in 1990.He had also worked at Safe Harbor Water Power Corp., Safe Harbor, and at Ament's Hardware, Washington Boro.He was a member of West Willow United Methodist Church, the former Conestoga Lions Club, Green Hill Sportsman Club in Conestoga, National Rifle Association and American Motorcycle Association.An avid NASCAR fan and hunter, he enjoyed local dirt track racing and motorcycling. He had also hunted big game in the western United States.He restored antique Farmall tractors.Born in Conestoga Township, he was the son of the late Franklin B. and Helen C. Groff Hess.He was married to Norma E. Bechtold Hess for 52 years on Sept. 2.Surviving in addition to his wife are three sons, J. Lester, husband of Nancy L. Hess of New Danville, Kenneth B., husband of Linda K. Hess of Pequea, and Harold W., husband of Eileen M. Hess of Millersville; and two grandchildren.Also surviving are a sister, Evelyn M. wife of C. Russell Kauffman of Willow Street; and a brother, F. Melvin, husband of Stella Hess of Lancaster.He was preceded in death by two sisters, E. Susan Aument and Catherine Beppler.
