John Perkins Harlan was born on 8 April 1850 in Pennsylvania. He died on 12 August 1916 in Tampa, Hillsborough, Florida from Bright's disease. He married Elizabeth Ann Hemphill on 31 October 1872 in Chester, Delaware, Pennsylvania.

John P. Harlan, formerly a resident of Wilmington, but for the past 12 years living at Tampa, Fla., where he owned an orange grove, died at that place Saturday. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Mrs. Lena E. Hume, Mrs. D. L. Thompson and George Harlan of this city; Mrs. Jacob Groff, of Lancaster, Pa., and William T. Harlan, of New York, N. Y.
Mr. Harlan was born here and lived here for many years. He was connected with the Philadelphia and Reading railroad company as an accountant until 1904 when he moved to Florida. He was a member of the Jr. O. U. A. M. Mr. Harlan was ill for only two weeks, death being due to Bright's disease.
